Be-Know-Do informs how leaders issue orders. Be is about who you are as a leader—your character, bearing, and ethics. When you issue orders, that Be shows in how you conduct yourself under pressure, treat soldiers, and uphold standards. This presence builds trust and a sense that you’re worth following.

Know-how is understanding the task inside and out—the mission, the commander's intent, the plan, the resources, and the risks. With solid Know-how, you can craft orders that are clear, feasible, and aligned with overall goals, which reduces confusion and increases compliance.

Do is the leader’s actions—decisive, consistent, and visible in the field. In issuing orders, Do means communicating the directive clearly, confirming understanding, guiding execution, and following through with supervision and accountability. Your actions demonstrate competence and commitment to the team’s success.

Together, Be-Know-Do makes orders credible, clear, and executable because the leader is trustworthy, knowledgeable, and proactive. Descriptions that limit Be-Know-Do to counseling or to a simple sequence don’t fit how orders are effectively issued in practice.
